Advanced Technologies Lab Renovations

JMC performed renovations in this suite of labs to support multidisciplinary collaborative research that combines biology, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering.

Nanoscale Integrated Sensors and Circuits Lab – JMC renovated an existing lab to increase efficiencies and provide additional testing areas for Dr. Sameer Sonkusale, a professor in electrical and computer engineering at Tufts. The nano lab enables students and faculty to research the role microelectronics and nanoelectronics can play in improving medicine and life sciences, such as the development of wearable and implantable biomedical microdevices. The lab includes space for materials fabrication and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Sustainable Electrochemical Energy Lab – Adjoining space to the nano lab was created for the Sustainable Electrochemical Energy Lab, led by Dr. Iryna Zenyuk, an assistant professor in mechanical engineering. Studies on electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies are performed in the facility. Research goals are the commercialization of advanced fuel cells and grid storage for sustainable energy solutions.

deRuiter Psychology Lab – Renovated existing offices to transform the space into a new psychology lab for Dr. JP deRuiter, a bridge professor in Tuft's psychology and computer science departments. The lab is used to study communication between humans and robotics through language, gesture, and other non-verbal signals. The space include two observation rooms, a recording room, and office space.

Kao Lab – JMC also created research space for Dr. Mimi Kao, an incoming assistant professor in the biology department. Dr. Kao and her students study neural mechanisms in songbirds to investigate vocal learning. Specifically, research is conducted to learn how the brain controls movement and how experience guides the performance and modification of learned motor skills in humans. The lab comprises research space in two buildings on campus, and includes a vivarium and sound boxes.
